An App in the Right Direction

I got a great announcement from Amazon today - a free iPhone and iPod Touch app is now available for reading Kindle books on those Apple devices. No more Kindle required. If you already have a Kindle, this app is going to synchronize between your now two readers - keeping track of where you left off reading, viewing your annotations, adjusting text size, adding bookmarks. You can read in portrait or landscape mode and pinch to zoom any photos. Great color! Change background colors and text colors to suit your own preferences or for reading in low light.

You can now purchase books directly from your iPhone, though it appears that, for now, Kindle newspapers, magazines and blogs are not available. I would certainly like to see that change soon. In the meantime, though, I am happy to see a movement towards consolidating our devices and hope soon to follow will be easy access to all the myriad of digital reading formats that are out there. iPhones do not presently have access to Flash, so while our publications still require your laptop for browsing them in their full glory, we still applaud this move towards greater accessibility.
