Knowing that costs change over time, and sometimes rapidly these days, I'm going to attempt to give a reasonable analysis of some print costs (based on 2008 figures of a small run color glossy monthly like you might find on racks, free in community centers around town) compared to the costs of doing a digital version of a similar publication.
First, the print costs
If creating a print run of 10,000 with a page count of 52, including covers, here is what I believe to be a reasonable estimate of monthly costs:
Printer charges: $11,000 - $13,000
Freight: $500 - $1,000
Distribution costs assuming 150 drop spots: $600 - $750
Distribution boxes: $75 - $125 each or Free standing racks: $25 - $30 each
(150 drop spots might be averaged then at $80 per some sort of box/rack for a total of $12,000 over the year or $1,000 per month)
Total monthly costs: $13,100 - $15,750
With many printed pieces, you could be substituting postage costs for rack distribution. Bulk rate postage on flat-sized packages for 10,000 pieces: $3,700 - $5,500
Total monthly costs on mailed pieces: $15,200 - $19,500
Digital costs
"Print run" is unlimited as there is only the one time fee and your digital issue is hosted indefinitely. With 52 pages including covers, here might be the monthly costs with a reputable digital creation company that includes a statistics package and your own branding applied to the publication, along with the ability to enhance that publication with live web links and emails, audio, video and animation as well as searchability:
Creating a digital version from an already created pdf:
$20 - $50 per page for a total monthly page cost: $1,040 - $2,600
Emailing 10,000 per month: $75 - $300
Total monthly costs: $1,115 - $2,900
