The first industry wide research report has been published by Gilbane Group, offering ‘Growth, Trends and Best Practices’ of the digital magazine and newspaper industry. The study features statistics that, in an industry first, unify audited data from two sources (BPA andABC) with data from unaudited publications. Highlights from the statistics include:
The number of business-to-business (B-to-B) publications offering digital editions has increased over 300% from 2005 to 2007, with total subscriptions also increasing over 300%. The number of consumer publications offering digital editions has increased over 200% from 2005 to 2007, with total subscriptions also increasing over 200%.
The report also includes over 20 case studies of best practices. One big suggestion is that digital editions are best used in conjunction with a website and that the two should be well integrated and co-ordinated. Another finding is that using rich media and linking is essential to create a positive experience.
